Show Up or Seize Up

Show Up or Seize Up

I can’t take credit for the wonderfully catchy phrase “show up or seize up.” One of our brilliant seated Pilates regulars said it during a chat about what keeps us coming back to class each week and it instantly stuck – because it’s true.

Showing up takes something – it takes intention, it takes honesty, it takes that small but powerful acknowledgement that maybe we need support and that change doesn’t happen by accident.

When we don’t show up, we can quite literally seize up.

Physically, that might mean stiff joints, tight muscles, increasing aches and pains, or reduced confidence in movement. Psychologically, it can feel like wading through treacle just to get started, knowing you’d feel better if you moved, but struggling to find the spark to begin.
Does that sound familiar?

Every year (sometimes every Monday!), many of us make plans to improve our health. We begin full of energy and good intentions, but life happens, motivation dips, routines wobble. That’s not failure, it’s human nature. This is where community becomes powerful.

Attending exercise classes and building rapport with others can play a powerful role in maintaining motivation and consistency – seeing familiar faces, sharing a laugh, being gently encouraged and knowing someone will notice if you’re not there can all help us keep going with health enhancing habits. We are not designed to do life, or health, entirely on our own – we are not “an island” – most of us need networks and support along the way.

Support might come one-to-one from a family member or healthcare professional. It might come from a small, welcoming group where you feel safe to move at your own pace. Often, we already know what we should be doing. The challenge isn’t knowledge, it’s navigating the barriers, like pain, weakness, fatigue and long-term health conditions; or waiting for scans, results or procedures. That in-between stage can feel uncertain and frustrating and it’s easy to put life and movement on hold, yet many people want to do something positive while they wait – something safe, something empowering – something that keeps both body and mind from stiffening under the weight of worry.

That’s where Walnut Grove can help.

We assess and treat musculoskeletal conditions and guide you towards safe, appropriate movement tailored to where you are right now, not where you think you “should” be. We can also connect you with carefully selected small-group exercise classes, where you’ll receive individualised attention alongside the encouragement and camaraderie that makes showing up easier.

Once you start showing up – consistently, imperfectly, bravely – something shifts. Joints move more freely, confidence builds, energy improves and perhaps most importantly, you realise you’re not doing it alone.

Many people have already discovered that showing up to Walnut Grove helps them feel stronger, steadier and supported in their health choices.

If you’re ready to show up – we’d love to help you take that first step. Just call in, call us on 01275 818303 or email healthcare@walnutgroveclinic.com
