Injection Therapy

Targeted hyaluronic acid injections to restore lubrication to affected joints - reducing pain, improving mobility and helping you maintain an active, comfortable life.
ABOUT THE THERAPY

What is Injection Therapy?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. Inside joints it is a critical component of synovial fluid, the fluid that lubricates the joints and cushions the bones as we move. In joints affected by osteoarthritis, the quality and quantity of this fluid decreases, leading to stiffness, reduced mobility and pain.

Osteoarthritis was once described simply as wear and tear. What we now understand is that it affects the entire joint, bone, cartilage, ligaments and the tissues that line the joint. It typically affects people over 50, though it can present in younger people with a history of joint injuries.

Ostenil injections restore hyaluronic acid to the affected joint, improving lubrication and making movement feel smoother and more comfortable. They are not a cure, but can provide meaningful relief for several months, and many patients find that periodic injections allow them to maintain an active, fulfilling lifestyle with significantly less pain.

At Walnut Grove, injection therapy is delivered by our practitioners using Ostenil Plus, which requires just a single injection rather than the traditional course of three. For smaller joints such as the toes or thumbs, we use Ostenil Mini.

Walnut Grove is an approved Ostenil clinic, meaning our practitioners are certified to stock and administer Ostenil products in line with the manufacturer’s standards.

WHAT TO EXPECT

How Injection Therapy helps you

Injection therapy offers targeted relief for joints where other treatments have reached their limit. Here is what our patients typically experience.
01
Reduces joint pain meaningfully and quickly
Ostenil injections restore the natural lubrication of the joint, often producing a noticeable reduction in pain within a short period after treatment. Many patients describe the joint going from a constant presence to something they are barely aware of.
02
Improves mobility and smoothness of movement
As lubrication is restored, joints move more freely and comfortably. Patients typically find they can return to activities - including exercise and sport - that had become difficult or impossible due to pain and stiffness.
03
A single injection rather than a course
We use Ostenil Plus, which delivers the full therapeutic benefit in one injection rather than the traditional course of three. This means less inconvenience, less time in clinic and a simpler experience overall.
04
Works alongside your wider treatment plan
Injection therapy is most effective as part of a broader approach to managing osteoarthritis. Alongside the right exercise, load management and physiotherapy support, Ostenil injections can help you maintain a good, consistent level of activity and quality of life.

What our patients say

Post-injection the knee feels smoother and there has been a reduction in pain. It's gone from being something that was always there to something I only notice sometimes. I am sustaining a good, consistent training load and am actually running pretty well.

Definitely worthwhile. Made things a lot easier.

Ostenil injections are primarily used to treat osteoarthritis, particularly in the knees, toes, fingers and thumbs. They are most appropriate for patients who have not found sufficient relief from other treatments such as physiotherapy, osteopathy or medication, or who want to reduce their reliance on pain relief. If you are not sure whether injection therapy is right for you, contact us at the clinic.

Your practitioner will assess your joint and confirm that Ostenil is appropriate for you before proceeding. The injection itself is straightforward and is delivered directly into the affected joint. We use Ostenil Plus, which means a single injection is all that is required rather than a course of three, keeping the process as simple as possible.

Results vary between individuals, but relief typically lasts for several months. Many patients find that periodic repeat injections maintain the benefit and allow them to stay active and comfortable over the longer term.

Ostenil Plus is used for larger joints such as the knee. Ostenil Mini is formulated for smaller joints including the big toe, thumb and finger joints. Your practitioner will advise which is appropriate for your specific joint and presentation.

Yes, and it is often most effective when it does. The right exercise programme, load management and physiotherapy or osteopathic support can significantly extend the benefit of Ostenil injections and help you maintain an active lifestyle long term. Our team will work with you to make sure injection therapy fits into a coherent overall plan.
