What is Cranial Remoulding?
Almost all babies born naturally arrive with some degree of head asymmetry, this is completely normal and most heads return to a typical shape within six weeks. However, if your baby’s head does not correct itself, or continues to worsen after that point, it is important to seek a diagnosis. Babies’ skulls are highly malleable at birth, which is why repeated external pressure can cause deformities known as positional or deformational plagiocephaly. Left untreated, these can become permanent.
Cranial remoulding uses a custom-made helmet or band worn by your baby to gently channel skull growth, correcting the asymmetry and improving overall head shape. Treatment is most effective before 18 months of age, so early assessment is important.

Cranial Remoulding FAQs
What age does my baby need to be to start treatment?
We do not see babies before 6 weeks as the head may correct itself naturally during that time. After that, the earlier you come the better. Treatment becomes significantly less effective after around 18 months of age as the skull hardens and growth slows.
How long will treatment take?
The average course of treatment is between 3 and 7 months, though this varies depending on your baby’s age at the start of treatment and the severity of the flattening. Generally speaking, the younger the baby and the milder the case, the shorter the treatment needed.
How often will we need to come in?
Adjustments to the helmet need to be made regularly to keep pace with your baby’s growth. In the early stages this is typically every other week, reducing to around once a month as progress slows. Every case is different, and your practitioner will guide you through what to expect at each stage.
Will my baby be upset by wearing the helmet?
Babies adapt to the helmets remarkably quickly and most seem to barely notice them. The helmets are individually made for each baby, so they are lightweight and comfortable from the start.
