Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is a personalised, evidence-informed approach that looks beyond a single symptom to understand the wider factors influencing your health, and helps your body recover and stay well.
ABOUT THE THERAPY

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a personalised, evidence-informed approach that looks beyond an individual symptom or diagnosis to understand the wider factors that may be influencing a person’s health. Rather than viewing the body as a collection of separate systems, it considers how areas such as nutrition, digestion, immune health, hormones, sleep, stress and nervous system regulation all interact.

The aim is not simply to ask what symptoms are present, but why they may have developed and what might now be preventing recovery. This can be particularly valuable for people living with persistent or complex symptoms, where investigations have been reassuring or treatment has helped only partially, but the person still doesn’t feel well.

Symptoms such as migraine, fatigue, chronic pain, digestive disturbance and dizziness often involve several overlapping influences rather than one isolated cause. The overall aim is to make sense of the full picture, identify the factors that matter most, and develop a realistic, personalised plan that supports the body’s capacity to recover and remain stable.

At Walnut Grove, functional medicine is offered by Sam, who brings more than 20 years of clinical experience and a background in osteopathy, with a particular interest in migraine, persistent pain, chronic fatigue and other complex symptoms involving the nervous system, gut and immune health.

WHAT TO EXPECT

How Functional Medicine helps you

Sam’s approach looks at the whole person and the connections between different areas of health. This can be particularly helpful for migraine, persistent pain, chronic fatigue and other complex symptoms where several factors may be contributing. The aim is to understand the wider picture, identify the areas that matter most and develop a clear, manageable plan alongside appropriate medical care.
01
Make Sense of Persistent Symptoms
Explore why symptoms may have developed, why they continue and what may now be preventing recovery.
02
Support Nervous System Regulation
Improve sleep, stress regulation, energy stability and the body’s ability to adapt and recover.
03
Strengthen Gut–Brain–Immune Health
Consider digestion, the microbiome, inflammation and the important connections between the gut, brain and immune system.
04
Improve Energy and Resilience
Support nutrient status, blood-sugar balance, metabolic health and the processes involved in cellular energy production.
05
Personalise Nutrition and Lifestyle
Develop realistic recommendations for food, movement, sleep and daily routines based on your individual needs and tolerance.
06
Create a Clear Treatment Plan
Prioritise the most important contributing factors, introduce changes at an appropriate pace and adapt the approach as you progress.

What patients say

Sam’s treatment has been nothing short of life changing, and I cannot recommend him enough. I was suffering from chronic migraine for two years – I had daily pain with many disabling neurological symptoms, and frequent severe flare-ups. The majority of my days are pain free, and the infrequent flare-ups are mild. When they do occur, I have the tools to treat them successfully.
AlisonChronic migraine
I was suffering from chronic joint and muscle pain and was having no success in finding the problem or a solution. Sam’s approach had an immediate effect simply through the act of authentic listening. The functional testing gave the opportunity to pinpoint exactly what was missing. I would highly recommend.
L.S.Chronic pain
I have been suffering with stress and exhaustion for many years and Sam has taught me ways to manage and improve my symptoms. He is very clear when explaining these strategies and after four sessions there is an improvement in my physical symptoms.
S.C.Fatigue & exhaustion
For anyone experiencing pain or injury, I cannot recommend Sam more highly. Sam’s attention to detail, his focus on the ‘whole being’ and fully understanding the underlying issues mean he is far superior to any other expert I have visited before. His work goes far beyond this, focusing on my breathing, nutrition and overall stress levels.

It’s particularly suited to people living with persistent or complex symptoms, such as migraine, fatigue, chronic pain, digestive problems or dizziness, especially where tests have been reassuring or treatment has only partly helped, but you still don’t feel well.

No. Functional medicine is designed to work alongside appropriate medical assessment and treatment, not to replace it. It complements your existing care by looking at the wider picture.

Not necessarily. Where helpful, functional testing may be considered, covering things like nutrient status, digestive health, metabolic function or hormones. Testing is only recommended when the result is likely to improve understanding or meaningfully change your plan.

The approach looks at three connected areas, supporting your nervous system and recovery, exploring internal factors like nutrition and gut health, and considering movement and physical tension. From there, a realistic, personalised plan is built around the factors that matter most for you.
