How do Scars affect me?

There are various reasons for a scar on a body from injuries to surgeries and many other causal factors.

Why do they affect your body?

Scars, even small scars can affect not only the body but also the mind.  How those scars came about will have a memory, your body and subconscious can hold onto those memories.   Functionally scars can affect your range of movement, not just in the scar area but the whole body.  They can also affect your lymphatic flow, which can cause congestion in the lymphatic system.  Scars or the cause of scars can also cause emotional trauma, which can be supported appropriately once addressed.  In addition, working on scars can help with pain management, body image and allowing internal organs to function (e.g. abdominal scarring and the digestive system).

When scars are released through a therapist’s hands and your self-management it can make a difference. Kate and Esther are both ScarWork practitioners and Kate is a specialist in oncology ScarWork therapy. They have found their experience of the gentle techniques used to soften the tissue of the scar and the surrounding area has greatly improved the healing process for their clients, both physically and mentally.  Kate says,  “I work predominantly with cancer patients, post-surgery and radiotherapy.   I have found that the process of working on the scar is both positive for the range of movement and my client’s feelings about the scar”.   Kate has found that a combination of therapy sessions with the self-care and scar care guidance has brought some control back to the hands of the clients.  “Some people are traumatised by their scars and the reason the scars are there.  They feel nervous about touching the scar, with a helping hand I can help people take back control and positively relate to their bodies.”

Recent research

Cancer patients received six ScarWork treatments, patients were asked to report on Consciousness, Satisfaction with Appearance, and Satisfaction with Symptoms; symptom improvements included itching, frequency of discomfort, sensations of numbness and overall troublesomeness. In written feedback, patients reported benefits including improved appearance, texture, mobility, well-being and acceptance of scars. No serious adverse events were reported. European Journal of Integrative MedicineVolume 44, June 2021”
