What is Better Breathing?

Better Breathing is an ongoing exercise class for people managing a long-term respiratory condition. You’re welcome whether you’ve already completed an initial Better Breathing pulmonary rehabilitation course and want to continue your progress, or you’re new to the classes and getting started for the first time.

The class runs for 60 minutes and uses gentle, appropriate exercise to help build or maintain lung function, fitness and breathing control. Everything is pitched at a level suited to those managing long-term respiratory conditions, with movement that supports your breathing rather than straining it.

Keeping active is one of the most effective ways to manage a respiratory condition over the long term, and doing it in a supportive group makes it easier to stay motivated and consistent. Better Breathing gives you the structure, guidance and encouragement to keep your health moving in the right direction.

Payment is taken on the day. Call reception to find out about current availability and start dates.

What our Better Breathing students say

I would like to say a huge thank you to Walnut Grove for the Better Breathing classes they run. This class has honestly given me a purpose to get up and go out each week. Living with lung disease (i am waiting for transplant) is so very hard, frightening and lonely. We are encouraged by our GPs and consultants to exercise, so, to find a group like this has given me a new purpose to fight this disease for as long as I can. Its because of the instructors. They are so knowledgeable and help us to adapt an exercise if we can't do it. The feeling of achievement is one of the best feelings. It's about the fellow users, the' we are all in this together' attitude'. It reminds us, we are not alone. A truly fabulous class.

Yes. This is a maintenance class designed for people who have already finished an initial Better Breathing pulmonary rehabilitation course. If you haven’t done one yet, contact reception and we’ll point you in the right direction.

The class is designed for people managing respiratory conditions, so the exercises are gentle and appropriate. You work at your own pace, and movements can be adapted to suit how you’re feeling on the day.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing you can move in and supportive flat shoes such as trainers. Bring a bottle of water, and any inhaler or medication you’d normally keep with you.

That’s completely understood, and the class is run with this in mind. You can rest whenever you need to, and the instructor will help you manage your breathing and pace yourself throughout.
