Pilates

Pilates builds strength, stability and flexibility from the inside out. Low impact and fully adaptable and suitable for everyone.
ABOUT THE PRACTICE

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise that improves posture, body awareness, coordination, flexibility, balance and breathing, while relieving stress and tension. Originally developed by Joseph Pilates in the early twentieth century, it has become one of the most widely practised forms of exercise in the world, and for good reason.

Unlike high-impact exercise, Pilates is low impact and adaptable, making it suitable for a wide range of people including those recovering from injury or surgery, those managing chronic conditions, and those simply looking to move better and feel stronger in everyday life. It is equally valued by athletes looking to develop whole body strength and reduce injury risk.

Central to the Pilates method is the core  – the muscles of the abdomen, lower back and hips. Rather than working muscles in isolation, Pilates trains them functionally, developing stability, control and endurance across the whole body. Emphasis is placed on alignment, breathing and building a strong foundation from which all movement flows.

Exercises can be modified from beginner to advanced, with intensity increasing gradually as the body adapts. Whether you are completely new to Pilates or returning after a break, there is a class and a pace that suits you.

At Walnut Grove Studio all our instructors are fully qualified and experienced. Pilates is a discipline where the instructor’s approach makes a real difference – we encourage you to try a class and find the right fit for you.

WHAT TO EXPECT

How Pilates helps you

Pilates delivers measurable improvements across strength, stability and posture
01
Improves strength and energy
Pilates builds functional strength across the whole body rather than targeting isolated muscle groups. As strength improves you will find everyday tasks easier and your overall energy levels increase as your body learns to move more efficiently.
02
Improves balance and core stability
Pilates develops the deep stabilising muscles of the abdomen, lower back and hips, improving balance and reducing your risk of falls. Better spinal stability means less fatigue, fewer aches and a reduced likelihood of injury.
03
Improves posture
Poor posture is often the root cause of persistent neck, shoulder and back pain. Pilates develops the body awareness and muscular support needed to hold yourself well - not just during a class but throughout your day.
04
Supports rehabilitation and injury recovery
Because of its low impact nature and adaptability, Pilates is widely used in physiotherapy and rehabilitation settings. Exercises can be modified to suit a specific injury, chronic condition or post-surgical recovery at a pace that is right for you.

Pilates Reviews

What our Pilates students say...

Pilates with Justine each week is fantastic! I have been attending Justine's classes for nearly 4 years. She is an excellent instructor who is very knowledgeable but also takes time to consider each persons ability during the class and give options to suit. Her classes are challenging but always fun and relaxed. Thank you Justine :)

It’s been many years that I’ve been attending Gemma’s Pilates class. She is patient, calm & certainly has lots of knowledge about the human body. Gemma cares for each individual person & will modify any exercise to suit. She seems to be coming up with different challenges most weeks. During lockdown the online class has been invaluable. It’s been something to look forward to & I’ve been able to keep in touch with the rest of the group.

Pilates FAQs

The standard mat class is a good starting point for most beginners. If you have an injury, a chronic condition or any reason to think a standard class might not be suitable, the Physio Led Pilates option is worth considering instead. If you are genuinely unsure, get in touch before booking and we will point you in the right direction.

For most people with back pain, Pilates is not only safe but actively beneficial. Strengthening the deep stabilising muscles of the core and lower back is one of the most effective things you can do for persistent back problems. If you have a specific diagnosis or have recently had surgery, let us know when you book and your instructor will ensure exercises are adapted appropriately.

Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely and that your instructor can see your alignment through. Loose or baggy clothes make it harder for your instructor to spot and correct your positioning, which matters more in Pilates than in most exercise classes. Bare feet or grip socks are ideal. Bring a water bottle. Mats are provided at the studio.

Most people notice something within the first few sessions, often a greater awareness of how they are holding themselves and a sense of working muscles they did not know they had. More tangible improvements in strength, posture and mobility typically build over six to eight weeks of regular attendance. Pilates rewards consistency more than intensity.

The standard mat classes, including Studio, Fitness Pilates and Express formats, are suitable for most people regardless of experience level. Physio Led Pilates is specifically designed for those who would struggle in a standard class due to injury, chronic conditions or difficulty getting to the floor. It is led by a physiotherapist rather than a general Pilates instructor, which makes a meaningful difference if your needs are more clinical. If you are on the fence about which is right for you, the Physio Led option is the safer starting point.

Yes, we often recommend a few 1-on-1 sessions to get the basic techniques right before joining a group class. This ensures your technique is good from the start, and can also give you confidence going into a class, so you don’t feel out of place or behind the rest of the group.
