It is Homoeopathy Awareness month and an opportunity to spread the word of Homoeopathy and to empower people to take charge of their health and wellbeing.
My name is Wendy Heath and I have been a practising Homoeopath for the last twenty-five years. It really helped me with my health problems when I was younger and I became fascinated with it, so I decided to study it. I am still as excited and enthusiastic about it as I was then.
One of the main principles of Homoeopathy is The Law of Similars, or Like Cures Like. For example, if you drink coffee in excess, it can cause sleeplessness, so if you give someone with sleeplessness Coffea which is coffee made into a Homeopathic remedy, it can cure it.
So, Homoeopaths are looking to prescribe substances that cause similar symptoms while allopathic doctors prescribe substances or drugs that are opposite, eg: antidepressants, anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, anti-virals.
The remedies are given as very small pills or powders, they can be plants, flowers, minerals, metals to name but a few. There are hundreds of remedies to choose from.
There is also a very definite Direction of Cure which is;
Symptoms go from above to below, from a more important organ to a less important organ eg: Heart to joints. From the inside to the outside eg: if someone has digestive problems, as that improves, they may get a temporary skin rash or discharge of mucus.
Homoeopathy treats the whole person, physical, mental and emotional.
So, let’s take a minute to consider what is health
- It could be seen as physical freedom from pain and limitation
- Emotional health, freedom from undue anxiety and fears. It is not about not experiencing emotions.
- Mental clarity
- Spiritual connection
- The ability to adapt to situations.
Now let’s consider disease;
The body is self-healing, it is intelligent – cuts and wounds heal. Grief and trauma we do recover from, usually. However sometimes this does not happen.
It could be a deviation from a healthy lifestyle for a long period, it could be hereditary.
The disease may be acute, which is self-limiting – colds, flu etc.
Or disease can be chronic like arthritis or digestive problems.
So, what is a Homoeopathic consultation like?
It’s all about you!!
I would want to know:
- Your symptoms
- Underlying causes
- Personal history of health
- Family history of health
- Diet
- Exercise
- Lifestyle
- Sleep and dreams
- Fears and anxieties
An initial consultation would last one to one and a quarter hours and I would ask you a lot of questions. It is completely confidential and nothing is too trivial.
I would then go away and analyse your case and send the remedies in the post to you with instructions on how to take them. A follow up appointment is then booked for three to four weeks to assess the action of the remedy and proceed from there.
One of the most important things to happen after taking a remedy is that people say I feel better in myself. This is the result of freed up energy, which is obviously a good sign.
Sometimes patients come back for a follow up and say nothing has really changed. When you start questioning them about their complaints, they say well that has gone and this has gone. That is because it is a natural state to feel well and the body forgets.
You do not have to be unwell to have Homoeopathy to help you, it can be very useful at times of change in your life or needing direction.
What can Homoeopathy treat?
It can treat almost anything and common complaints are menstrual problems and menopausal symptoms. Migraines, skin problems, digestive problems to name but a few. It is safe to use in pregnancy and childbirth, safe for mother and baby such as morning sickness, pain, anxiety, labour, recovery.
Children may present with asthma, eczema, sleep, behaviour problems. Older people can be helped and everyone in between.
