Yoga

Yoga combines movement, breathwork and mindfulness to strengthen the body and calm the mind. Low impact and adaptable and suits all levels and abilities.
ABOUT THE PRACTICE

What is Yoga?

Yoga is one of the world’s oldest and most widely practised forms of exercise, combining physical postures, breathing techniques and mindfulness to support both body and mind. Rooted in ancient tradition but accessible to everyone, yoga builds strength and flexibility while encouraging a deeper awareness of how you move, breathe and feel.

At its core, yoga works through a series of postures designed to increase strength, flexibility and balance, combined with conscious breathing that supports relaxation, focus and mental clarity. Whether you are drawn to a dynamic, flowing practice or something slower and more restorative, yoga offers a genuinely adaptable path to better health and wellbeing.

At Walnut Grove Studio, yoga is taught by an experienced instructor who incorporates elements of different styles and offers appropriate variations depending on your level of experience and specific goals. Whether you are a complete beginner or a more experienced practitioner, our yoga classes are designed to make you feel great, on and off the mat.

Yoga is offered as an ongoing course rather than individual drop-in sessions. Call reception to find out about current availability and start dates.

WHAT TO EXPECT

How Yoga helps you

Yoga works on the body and mind simultaneously, delivering benefits that go well beyond flexibility.
01
Improves posture and flexibility
Regular practice gradually lengthens and releases tight muscles, improving posture and range of movement. The effects carry through into everyday life, helping you move more freely and comfortably.
02
Improves balance and core stability
Yoga develops the deep stabilising muscles that support balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls and improving confidence in movement.
03
Improves strength and energy
Holding and flowing through postures builds functional strength across the whole body. As strength improves, everyday tasks become easier and energy levels increase.
04
Supports mental wellbeing
The combination of mindful movement, focused breathing and stillness makes yoga a powerful tool for managing stress, anxiety and low mood, leaving you calmer and more centred after every class.

What our Yoga students say...

A very pleasing set of four one on one yoga lessons with Tatiana, designed to get me back into a yoga frame of mind! Tatiana is friendly and reassuring, and I felt I could discuss any aspect of the lessons with her. I'm very glad I took this route back into Yoga.

This is the most common reason people put off starting yoga, and also the most common misconception about it. Flexibility is not a prerequisite for yoga. It is one of the things yoga gives you. Everyone starts somewhere, and Tatiana’s classes are designed to offer variations and modifications so that wherever you are starting from, there is a version of each posture that works for your body right now.

Possibly not if you are looking for something purely high intensity, but yoga’s physical demands are often underestimated. Holding and flowing through postures builds genuine strength, and a well-structured class will challenge you in ways that surprise you. If you want to explore what is on offer before committing, a 1:1 session with Tatiana is a good way to find a level and style that matches what you are looking for.

Comfortable, stretchy clothing that moves with you and allows your instructor to see your alignment. Form-fitting works better than loose and baggy for the same reason as Pilates, your instructor needs to see how you are moving. Bare feet are standard. Bring a water bottle and arrive a few minutes early for your first class so you have time to settle in. Mats are provided at the studio, though you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

There is overlap, both develop strength, flexibility, core stability and body awareness, but they come from different traditions and have a different feel. Pilates is more clinically oriented, with a strong focus on spinal alignment and rehabilitative movement. Yoga incorporates breathwork, mindfulness and a meditative dimension that Pilates does not. Many people find the two complement each other well and do both. If you are unsure which to try first, get in touch and we will help you think it through.

Yes, and meaningfully so. The combination of mindful movement, conscious breathing and stillness has a direct effect on the nervous system, shifting the body out of a stress response and into a calmer state. Many people find that the mental benefits of a regular yoga practice are as significant as the physical ones, sometimes more so. If managing stress or anxiety is a primary reason for coming, mention it to Tatiana and she can shape the sessions accordingly.
